It was supposed to be a day like any other. Another boring day without friends. Karen would have sat in the library the entire day, like she did every weekend, but one single letter disturbed that entire plan.

Karen was sitting at the Hufflepuff table this morning when her owl suddenly delivered a letter. She was just about to open it when the letter suddenly grew lips and eyes and started talking.

Dear Miss Finn,
Yesterday at 11 o'clock a man named Nathan Finn arrived at the hospital St Mungos after a grave accident. He is alright, but has asked us to warn you, his daughter.
Hope to see you soon at St. Mungos.
Mme Frey.

Karen suddenly became paler, she couldn't believe what she had just heard. Her father was lying in the hospital? How could that possibly be. "He probably tried to invent a new potion, as always. I knew it would backfire one day." Karen thought. She had immediately left for St. Mungos.

Arriving there, Karen didn't know where she was supposed to go. She didn't even know what room or what department her father was at. "Excuse me." she said to a man that was passing by, but he didn't even look at her and continued to walk. "Great." Karen thought, "Just great."

This wasn't something he did everyday. No, not even that often to tell you the truth. He despised doing it, visiting the man he knew was the very reason his life had turned upside down, and now, he had to live with people he didn't really know, with his past haunting him in his sleep. No, never would he visit a man like that.

Alex loathed having to go to St. Mungo's, not only because he had to dress up well for it, but because he had to visit the man he hated a lot. His father. It was true, it had been his fault that his father had ended up in this place anyway, almost unable to even lift a muscle, most of his features unrecognizable. He was young then, and he had no regrets for doing it. Yes, he didn't, because the man deserved it for everything he did to their family.

Now, dressed up in clean robes with his hair slightly messed up, he tried to locate the room where his father lay. It had been months... no, years since he'd been here to visit the man and now, going back because of the insistence of an aunt he never even knew existed, he went back. He was walking down the corridor when he noticed a girl that seemed entirely familiar to him. He didn't fancy talking to anyone, heck, he didn't even do it at his school, let alone at a public place, but he was desperate, not just to find the room, but to get there, say a few words and leave. Heartless? No. It was his fault anyway. He walked up to the girl, who had a hint of being lost herself but he couldn't care much about that. "Excuse me, is this the burn department?" he asked, trying to sound as politely as he could with a gruff voice.

Once again, Karen had no idea where she was. Yes, she was a woman, so her sense of orientation was close to none existent. But the burn unit wasn’t really a strange place to her… no, she had been there every day for about 2 weeks a couple of years ago. Her mother had died in that unit. She had, just like her father, experimented with potions, but it didn’t quite go as she expected. The whole house had exploded back then, and it was a miracle that Karen and her father both survived that night. But her mother wasn’t as lucky. She had fallen into a coma only to die 2 weeks later. Karen had always feared that her father might have the same accident one day… and now it had happened. She could only hope that it wasn’t as bad as her mother’s accident. Karen couldn’t bear to see her father in a coma. And what would she do if he came to die? She had no other relatives that could take care of her. “Ok, I have to stop thinking about that. I’m sure he’ll be just fine. He has to be.”

Karen suddenly spotted a man with a white coat just a bit further. “A doctor!” She thought whilst walking towards the man. “Excuse me, sir, could you please tell me where the burn unit is?” The man obviously didn’t understand what she had just asked him and just stared at her for a moment. “What did you say?” he asked her. “The burn unit?” Karen impatiently asked. “Oh. It’s on the second floor.” The doctor said before walking away.

Feeling kind of frustrated, Karen started to walk towards the elevators when someone behind her suddenly asked her a question. She turned around and immediately recognised the guy that had just asked her if she knew where the burn unit was. Karen had never really spoken to him, but she had seen him at school. He was new, just like her, and they where probably going to be in the same classes this year. “The burn unit? I’m going there too, you can go with me if you want.” Karen said with a smile. But even though she was smiling, you could see the fear in her eyes. She was afraid to go see her father… afraid of what she might find once she got there.

Alex didn't like the predicament he was in. It seemed a bit stupid, him thinking so and fuming about it, and it may not even be true, but still, the thought that it had crossed his mind made him frustrated. What was it? He didn't like appearing weak and vulnerable. Like now. Here he was in St. Mungo's, at a place every witch and wizard must know, or at least have a faint idea of, and he was lost. It was an insipid reason, but there nonetheless. Now look where he is, asking a girl to point him to the direction of the man he didn't even have even an ounce of feeling, or anything for that matter, at all. If it was even ethical for him to think it, he didn't even want the man to exist anymore, even if he was just in a coma and hadn't uttered a word to him for so long.

As he waited for a response from the girl, Alex glanced around at the quiet place. Everything looked as if it was precariously planned by someone. All the injuries of the same degree stayed in this floor and whatnot, and everything seemed to be in perfect balance. He didn't like it, not one bit. Sure, he didn't look like the sort of guy that was like that, but he didn't like being really clean. It was sort of freaky for him and he always made sure there was something messy about him, like his hair now. He was pulled out of his thoughts as the girl replied to him, telling him she was heading to the burn unit as well. He simply nodded and walked towards her at the elevators. He could sense that she was afraid, even if she tried to conceal it. He didn't know why, but he felt sympathy towards her and in an effort to make her feel better, he smiled a small smile at her and introduced himself. "Name's Alex. You?"
